Agreed, I had the same issue, 2 sets of new A's and no time to use them. If the rule was announced in the spring effective the beginning of the following year I would strongly favor Rs.

Yes--there have been racers using other brand tires for over 10 years.
Why remove choice and increase expenses for the racer?
and Yes it will increase the cost of tires---no competition=higher prices

The AS proposal listed all of the tires available from all of the manufacturers that fell within the tread wear guidelines. This would not have knocked out any particular manufacturer, unless they only made an A type tire. I don't remember all of the particulars, but it seemed, at the time, to give everyone a choice. The bottom line was longer lasting tires. I might point out that competition does not always mean lower prices. With a Spec tire, with a contract negotiated by SCCA, (see SM, and many other classes) the tire prices, contingency, etc. are tightly controlled by contract.
From the best I can determine, the spec tire contracts have all resulted in lower overall tire budgets for the majority of racers. Some lost sponsorship deals with companies, like Kumho (or whomever), but generally the result was lower cost for the racer. Don't know of any class, with a spec tire, that wants to go back to the wild west.

Dean, Tom Himes' question was whether anyone uses anything besides Hoosier NOW. Of course there have been other manufacturers in the past. 2019 is a different story.

As far as I know, Hoosier and Toyo (RR) are the only tire companies even making race tires in the sizes we need, and with Toyo, you'd have to go to 17s, as the 16s are way too narrow. My understanding is that BFG has not made tires in a while, though you can still get old stock. Goodyear, Kumho, Hankook (probably others I've forgotten) are all gone.

The point is that Hoosier is the defacto spec tire now.
