Close ratios to improve reliability?
Who's ass is this smoke intended for? While you could put together a tortured argument that narrow rpm ranges will reduce trans loads from abusive drivers, the real motivation for close ratio gears is to lower lap times. And to further enhance engine tuning to a narrow peak. This a classic example of rules creep. Once, it was a prime directive to stop rules creep, now it seems rules creep is the long-term plan. Bring in alternate transmissions, with the promise that existing gear ratios be maintained, then (as if we have no memory) claim the ratios are the reliability problem. If we want to keep car counts up and attract new competitors, we can't keep raising the bar (and the cost). But if the plan is to make life easier for the select few without budget constraints, then keep it up.

I had the same thoughts even as to the reasoning--I sent in my response to the WDYT-- but I never received confirmation of the letter from SCCA.
Thanks Mark--at least I wasn't alone! Dean |

The ASAC held its telecon last evening and the vote on the WDYT was to NOT recommend allowing additional gear sets. This now goes to the CRB who will meet Nov 5 to make the final recommendation to the BOD. I never speak for the CRB, but, LIKELY, they will not go against the ASAC recommendation (so likely there will not be additional gear sets). That result will appear in the November 20 Fastrack.
Please note that when any letter is sent to the ASAC, the ASAC responds to it with research before answering. In most class-wide requests, the ASAC now puts out a WDYT to hear what you all think before deciding. This process was followed with the request for closer ratio gear sets. There was no smoking of anything by anyone, a** or not, just, once again, attempting to follow a procedure that allows all of you to express your opinion about a proposal. Pam |

Since I was the one who sent in the request for closer ratios, I will tell you the reason. I thought it would be more fun to drive a car with close ratios, even with a weight adder. Pure and simple. More fun. Same cost for the transmission, but more fun to drive.
