Runoffs tent meeting
 
We had our meeting with the CRB scheduled for lunch hour on Thursday. We were grouped with Touring and Showroom, so at the start of the meeting all the AS guys exited the main tent and had our own meeting next door. There were quite a few drivers there. Bob Dowie, our liaison with the CRB came over with us. ASAC members were Chuck Dawson, Andy McDermid, Kyle Watkins, Jim Wheeler and the meeting chairman Philip Smith. John Blanchard was off testing for GM and asked Philip to conduct the meeting.
Philip presented the new engine rules (there were a couple of changes that didn't make it onto the engine sheet) that were met with general approval. We also discussed the inclusion of T2 cars in the near future.

Philip,

Can you tell us what the changes were to the sheet? Looks like the Vortec head option for the 305's is dropped. Is that true?

Thanks for posting that. The ASAC did remove the Vortec Head option because the new aluminum heads will bolt on to the 305. Once a racer buys a set of Vortec heads, has the work done on them and then buys a new intake there would not be any significant cost savings. In addition, the ASAC felt that we wanted to keep the number of heads to a minimum to ease the Tech issues.

I'm confused. Is this still a proposal or have these rules been enacted for 2008?

This is the proposal.

We are working very hard to get these rules out for 2008. They have been discussed at the last two tent meetings and were put out for member input in the spring of 2007.

That makes sense. So, this new Edelbrock head will bolt on and work on a 305 block without having to fly-cut the block to clear valves or any chamber shrouding?

The engine builders have told us that the 1.94 valve heads will bolt onto the 305 without any modifications.

As always with this stuff you should get the modeling clay out and test to make sure that there is no issue.

so is it the case that the carb stays the same along with the intake and just the heads and below are subject to the changes outlined?

The rule changes are written so that everyone can keep running what they currently have and get a 100 weight break. In addition, you can put the new heads on the current 305 and get most of the performance increase but you will need to weight 100 lbs more. For people that want to build a new engine they can go the 4.00 inch bore 3.00 inch stroke route and make the other changes.
